Incubator for the Arts
In order to encourage and maintain a lively arts community, the Howard County Center for the Arts offers affordable studio, teaching and meeting space to local artists and community-focused arts groups. It is currently home to over 30 artists and arts organizations through its Resident and Arts Advancement programs.
As a community arts venue, the Center also serves as an incubator for the arts. Several initiatives are in place that offer artists and arts groups opportunities to establish themselves and grow.
Resident Artist Studio Program
The studio program provides affordable workspace in a supportive, nurturing environment to practicing visual artists. Center resident artists exhibit their work annually and participate in a variety of open studio events. Resident artists have 24-hour access to their studio space. Studios feature abundant natural light, a convivial community atmosphere, and access to water. Artists working in a variety of styles and media are encouraged to apply, although the studio spaces are best suited to artists working in 2-D media. Resident Arts Organization Program
Like the studio program, the Resident Arts Organization program provides much-needed stable and affordable community arts space, this time for non-profit organizations actively involved in the production and promotion of the arts in one or more disciplines. Organizations may have office, studio, rehearsal, and/or performance space at the Center. The current Resident Arts Organizations: Chesapeake Shakespeare Company; Columbia Orchestra; and Howard County Ballet.

Arts Advancement Program
The Arts Advancement program provides volunteer-run, non-profit arts organizations with low-cost space in which to meet, present public programs and establish a base of operations. For a nominal annual fee, selected organizations receive up to ten meeting dates and a mailbox address at the Howard County Center for the Arts Center. Current Arts Advancement participants: Association of Traditional Hooking Artists, Mason Dixon Chapter, Baltimore Appliqué Society; Baltimore Bead Society; Black Eyed Susan Button Club; China Painting Artists of Maryland; Embroiderers Guild of America, Constellation Chapter; Howard County Art Guild; Howard County Music Teachers Association; Maryland Art League; and the Weavers Guild of Greater Baltimore.

RENTALS
Artists and arts groups also have an opportunity to rent space at the Art Center on a one-time, occasional or regular basis to create their own programs.
Classrooms
The Center’s three multipurpose classrooms are great places to hold lessons, workshops, rehearsals, or other arts activities for up to 25 people. The spaces are working studio classrooms with sinks, worktables, and flexible seating. A limited number of easels are available. There is no short or long-term storage available; program supplies must be provided by the renter.
Conference Room
The Center’s conference room is ideal for casual art-related meetings and gatherings. Lined on one side by windows and on the opposite by glass display cases, this carpeted room has flexible table and seating options and, depending on the configuration, can accommodate up to 100 people. A portable room divider can be used for breakout sessions or to create a more intimate space.
Dance Studio
The Center’s 20’ x 30’ dance studio features a sprung wood floor and marley, a mirrored wall, dance barres, and windows and skylights for ample natural light. The studio is available for dance classes and rehearsals, as well as compatible arts activities. Capacity varies by use.
